Joel Quirk is a Professor of Politics at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He is the author or co-editor of eight books, including ‘Research as More than Extraction? Knowledge production and gender-based violence in African societies’, forthcoming with University of Ohio Press. Joel’s research focuses on enslavement and abolition, mobility and work, social movements and contentious politics, gender and violence, and the politics and history of Africa. He is a founding editor of Beyond Trafficking and Slavery, where his most recent project was entitled ‘It is time to get off the fence on sex worker rights’.
